Hood College

Hood College is a lovely campus of 1200 undergraduate students and 800 graduate students in Frederick, Maryland, which is a beautiful town less than an hour from Baltimore, Washington DC, and Gettysburg, PA. The quaint and historic downtown Frederick, full of shops restaurants, galleries and parks, is an 8-10 minute walk for students, but there's a free shuttle as well.

Hood was originally a women's seminary and college, and is about 60% female today. Business, Education, Computer Science, Nursing, and Biology are the most popular majors, and here's a cool fact: Hood gets new, state-of-the-art lab equipment from Fort Detrick every 5 years when the military upgrades to the latest and greatest. In the nursing program, there are 60 seats per class, and they're looking at high school science grades and rigor as well as the writing sample for admission.

40% of the undergraduates here are athletes, 70% come from Maryland, and half of those in-state students come from the surrounding area.

The former interim president has officially been appointed president; we met her on her second full day. I thought she was smart, impressive, and had great energy and vision for the college. It's going to be a tough road ahead for small, regional private liberal arts colleges, and the ones that will survive will need strong leadership like this. Their endowment is $260 million, and they recently received a $50 million donation, all of which will be allocated for scholarships. At $65K all in, students can receive scholarships of up to $33K.

Their website has a live Webcam - I love that! Have a look for yourself! https://lnkd.in/eXaXqb9Y
