Flagler College

Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida is a beautiful, urban campus of 47 acres with 2400 students, four miles from the ocean and 35 miles south of Jacksonville. The college is centered around a gorgeous historical hotel that is now a university building. The dining hall inside is the most stunning I’ve ever seen: Hogwarts meets Tiffany glass. 59% of all first-year students come from out-of-state, and while they do come all over the country, the vast majority come from the southeast and northeast regions.

All students start their academic journey here with a first-year seminar which introduces students to the Flagler campus and college-level work. In the second year, students take a special “FlagSHIP” course (Flagler Sophomore High Impact Practice) which may involve a short study abroad stint or another real-world, experiential opportunity. Some examples of FlagSHIP classes in past years include:

-A Photographic Investigation of Changing St. Augustine
-Farm to Table: Sustainable Eating Practices
-Community-Based Archaeology
-Hakuna Matata: Culture, Environment and Development in Kenya

Some interesting majors at Flagler include Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Sport Management, Social Entrepreneurship, Media Studies, Cinematic Arts, Coastal Environmental Science, Digital Media Production and Journalism, Computer Information Systems, and Data Science. There are plenty of majors in the liberal arts as well.

Outside of the classroom, Flagler offers Division 2 sports (but no football), two sororities and one fraternity (but no houses on campus), and a waterfront dock with kayaks, paddleboards, and fishing equipment for rent – all free. During spring break, the college sponsors a free 3-night service trip camping and exploring the Florida National Scenic Trail to support the maintenance of those trails.

The average GPA of admitted students is 3.62, and the average SAT of those submitting is 1152. With an all-in price of $50K and merit scholarships between $3K and $12K, Flagler is a great value!
